Mt. Elliott Cemetery was established on 12 acres of farmland on Detroit’s east side. The first burial occurred just 12 days later when Robert Elliott, local architect and founding member of the committee that created the cemetery, was laid to rest. The cemetery was then named Mt. Elliott in his honor. Today visitors will find many prominent early Detroiters among those memorialized at Mt. Elliott Cemetery.
