Cemetery Director – A Management/Leadership Position

As a Cemetery Director you will be responsible for directing cemetery operations and programs and coordinating activities of workers engaged in providing sales, customer service, burial services and cemetery ground maintenance by performing the following duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Formulates and administers cemetery policy and services under authority of General Manager and Board of Trustees.
  • Analyzes and coordinates budget estimates and regulates expenditures to administer budget and increase efficiency.
  • Analyze operations to evaluate performance of Association and its staff in meeting objectives, and to determine areas of potential cost reduction, program improvement, or policy change.
  • Observes and inspects grounds periodically to determine needs for maintenance or other issues.
  • Directs activities of supervisory staff and other workers engaged in burial services, landscaping, or maintenance of cemetery grounds.
  • Directs arrangement of details such as site of burial, digging of grave or opening of crypt, and placement of equipment and protective covering, with Funeral Director or other official for burial services.
  • Participates in layout, planning and preparing paperwork on construction projects.
  • Confers with suppliers, architects, contractors, paving company officials, and plumbers to plan and oversee major projects.
  • Confer with board members, organization officials, and staff members to discuss issues in cemetery management, sales/marketing, coordinate activities, and resolve problems.
  • Administers union contract, and responsible for negotiating contract.
  • Maintains safety program, keeps all postings current and keeps the safety information up to date.
  • May assist in the selling of burial plots to patrons.
  • Review reports submitted by staff members to recommend approval or to suggest changes.
  • Interface and collaborate with other directors and staff members.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Manages up to three subordinate supervisors who supervise up to a total of 50 employees in the Grounds, Office and Operations areas. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:

Master’s degree (M. A.) or equivalent; or eight to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills: To perform this position successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: ICCFA University courses helpful, such as sales, management/administrative, and grounds management.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
