Grounds Staff

Cemetery grounds staff prepares graves and maintains cemetery grounds by performing the following duties.

  • Drives gasoline or diesel powered equipment to move materials, tow trailers, pull out objects imbedded in ground, or pull cable of winch to raise, lower, or load heavy material. 
  • May assist in repairs of automobiles, trucks and other automotive vehicles or equipment. 
  • Assembles, installs and repairs pipes, fittings of water system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Examines, maintains, and repairs vehicle such as automobiles, trucks etc..
  • Locates grave site according to section, lot, and plot numbers, and marks area to be excavated.
  • Digs grave to specified depth.
  • Places concrete slabs on bottom and around grave to line it.
  • Positions casket-lowering device on grave, covers dirt pile and sod with artificial grass carpet, erects canopy, and arranges folding chairs to prepare site for burial service.
  • Sets grave marker on / in gravesite.
  • Mows grass, prunes shrubs, trims trees, and plants flowers and shrubs on grave.
  • Removes leaves and other debris from graves.
  • Drives vehicles such as backhoe, trucks, tractors and mowers.
  • Repairs and maintains tools and equipment.
  • Opens and closes mausoleum vaults and gates.
  • Studies water system plans, inspects structure to repair or prevent leaks. Cuts and threads pipe.  Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings, pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent
  • Fastens attachments, such as graders, plows, and rollers, to tractor and/or trucks with hitch pins.
  • Releases brake, shifts gears, and depresses accelerator or moves throttle to control forward and backward movement of tractor and/or trucks.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

  • This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or 6 to 12 months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Current valid driver’s license

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and vibration.  The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; and risk of electrical shock.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
